IPL 2025: Punjab has the highest remaining budget after retentions, Royals’ purse nearly empty- read details

The retention lists for IPL 2025 have been released, with franchises spending heavily from their 120-crore purses to secure their core groups. All eyes are now on the mega auction, set to take place at the end of November. In this auction, Punjab Kings will enter with the largest remaining budget, while Rajasthan Royals will have the least.

Punjab Kings Has the Highest Remaining Purse

All 10 teams submitted their retained players’ lists to the BCCI ahead of the mega auction. Punjab Kings retained only two players, releasing stars like Arshdeep Singh. The management kept Shashank Singh for 5.5 crore and Prabhsimran Singh for 4 crore, spending a total of 9.5 crore. This leaves Punjab with a balance of 110.5 crore and four Right to Match (RTM) cards.

Rajasthan Royals Has No RTM Cards Left

Among the teams, Rajasthan Royals spent the most on retentions. They retained six players: Sanju Samson (18 crore), Yashasvi Jaiswal (18 crore), Riyan Parag (14 crore), Dhruv Jurel (14 crore), Shimron Hetmyer (11 crore), and Sandeep Sharma (4 crore), totaling 79 crore. Now, only 41 crore remains in their purse, and they have no RTM cards left.

CSK eyes powerful spinner, could target in mega auction; RTM choice also revealed

Before the mega auction for IPL 2025, all teams have revealed their retention lists, including Chennai Super Kings (CSK). CSK has retained captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana, and Shivam Dube in the capped slots, while the legendary MS Dhoni has been retained in the uncapped category. With these retentions, CSK will have a budget of 55 crores for the mega auction and will also have one Right to Match (RTM) card available.

There were reports that CSK might target Rishabh Pant, released by Delhi Capitals, in the auction, but recent reports suggest that the team is also considering targeting R. Ashwin. Ashwin began his career with CSK and played several seasons for the franchise. However, he has since moved to different teams, with Rajasthan Royals being his latest. Since RR did not retain Ashwin, CSK could look to bring back their former player. Ashwin’s home ground is the Chepauk Stadium, and he’s a skilled T20 player who can make an impact with both the ball and bat. A few months ago, Ashwin had also expressed interest in playing for CSK again.

CSK could re-sign New Zealand’s opener

Among the players released by CSK is New Zealand’s Devon Conway. Conway made a significant contribution to CSK’s title win in IPL 2023, but he was unable to play a single match last season due to injury. CSK has retained only four capped players, so they still have an RTM card available. Reports indicate that the team may use this RTM card for Conway. It will be interesting to see if CSK manages to secure their preferred players during the mega auction.

Australia’s renowned batting coach Neil D’Costa has urged the Australian selectors not to rush 19-year-old batsman Sam Konstas into the team for the five-Test series against India, citing the example of India’s Prithvi Shaw. D’Costa believes that Konstas is not yet ready for the five-day format. The young batsman is among the contenders to open the innings with Usman Khawaja in the series against India. D’Costa, who has previously coached Michael Clarke and the late Phillip Hughes, has also worked with Konstas to develop his batting skills.

“Rushing could make him end up like Prithvi Shaw”

D’Costa told the Sydney Morning Herald, “He could play 100 Tests, but if he’s selected for the national team now, he might only play 10 Tests. He’s a player with great potential, but he should be allowed more time in domestic cricket.” He added, “Selecting him now would be ridiculous. We have the example of Prithvi Shaw. I could point out his weaknesses before he was selected for the team.” Shaw made his Test debut in 2018 and last played a Test in 2020. He hasn’t played an international match since July 2021.

Ponting names Warner’s replacement

Former Australian cricketers Ricky Ponting and Ian Healy have advocated for the selection of Australia A captain Nathan McSweeney as the opening batsman for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which starts on November 22 in Perth. With David Warner retiring earlier this year and Steve Smith returning to his preferred No. 4 spot, Australia is in search of an opener to partner Usman Khawaja. McSweeney, Sam Konstas, Cameron Bancroft, and Marcus Harris are all contenders for the spot.

Ponting told the ‘ICC Review Show,’ “In my view, Nathan McSweeney, born in Queensland and now playing for South Australia, is the only candidate for this role. He’s performed well for Australia A.” Healy told SEN Radio, “I’m glad people have seen how well Nathan McSweeney can bat. I know him well, as he’s linked to my club. Australian selectors are aware of him too, given his recent strong performances for South Australia. Among the four contenders, he appears the most prepared.”

Zimbabwe made history on the evening of Wednesday, October 23, when they posted the highest score in T20 cricket history. In the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier against Gambia, Sikandar Raza’s team drew attention by scoring a massive 344 runs. Previously, the world record for the highest score in T20 cricket was held by Nepal, who scored 314 runs against Mongolia in 2023. Among Full Member nations, Zimbabwe broke India’s record of 297 runs.

Gambia’s bowlers set unfortunate records during the match, with Musa Jorbateh conceding 93 runs in his 4 overs. Additionally, five Gambia bowlers gave away 50 or more runs.

Chasing a target of 345, Gambia’s team was bowled out for just 54 runs, and Zimbabwe won the match by a staggering margin of 290 runs.

Team India’s star spinner R. Ashwin made history during the ongoing Pune Test against New Zealand when he took the wicket of Kiwi batsman Will Young. With this wicket, Ashwin became the highest wicket-taker in the history of the World Test Championship (WTC). He surpassed Australia’s star spinner Nathan Lyon to claim the top spot on the list. Ashwin now leads the list with 189 wickets in the WTC, while Nathan Lyon is second with 187 wickets.

This is also India’s worst performance at home in Test cricket. Thirty-seven years ago, in 1987, India was bowled out for 75 against the West Indies in Delhi. Additionally, this was India’s lowest score against New Zealand. Previously, India had scored 81 runs in Wellington against the Kiwis in 1976.

Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan will play his final Test match in front of home fans. Shakib has been included in Bangladesh’s squad for the first Test match against South Africa, starting on October 21. Before the second and final Test against India in Kanpur, Shakib had expressed his desire to play his last Test on home soil against South Africa, provided the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) could ensure his security. During this period, Shakib had also issued an emotional message.

Shakib is accused of being involved in the murder of a student, but at the time of the incident, the experienced Bangladeshi player was participating in a T20 league in Canada. BCB’s new president, Faruque Ahmed, had rejected Shakib’s request, stating that the board is not a security agency and cannot guarantee his safety.

Bangladesh’s interim government’s sports advisor, Asif Mahmood, mentioned that Shakib would be provided with security once his political stance became clear.
